CARBON OFFSETS
Updated October 2009
The biggest project we are investigating is how to reduce or offset carbon emission on our site. That boils down to reducing the impact of cars to get as close to zero as we can.
Some of the projects we are looking at include bike racks and connections to bike paths, increased transit and alternate modes of transport. Other projects would directly offset the carbon on the site, by finding ways to eliminate it from the air. Planting more trees to "soak up" the carbon is a good example of offsetting emissions.
Update October 2009 – This summer we undertook a carbon sequestration analysis. Every tree on the entire Forks site was counted to determine how much carbon is naturally being removed by existing trees. The study found 4,181 trees.
The study revealed that our green spaces are absorbing approximately 65 tonnes CO2 on the Forks site every year - that’s the equivalent of about 24 SUVs driving 20,000 km.
