Progress Report on Monk's East Yards Research, 1988, Volumes 1 & 2

Monks, Gregory G.

This report is recorded in two volumes. The first twenty-one pages of this manuscript is a summary of the East Yards Archaeological Project. The excavation was conducted by the Manitoba Universities Archaeological Field School. A cellar turned refuse pit was discovered; these cellars were constructed for only the highest-ranking Hudson’s Bay Company officials. In another area, archival records indicate a dwelling or perhaps a courthouse (as seen on Moody’s 1848 map). The faunal remains include wild and domestic bird and fish, as well as sheep, deer and bovine. The artifacts from this dig were from the fur trade era, with very few Native pieces. This manuscript includes maps and stratigraphical profiles, and the remainder of the report is artifact lists.
