Winter has arrived at The Forks

Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail, Winnipeg – Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail finally opens, with two rinks in the Port.

“This year’s unseasonably warm temperatures put us a little behind schedule,” says Paul Jordan, Chief Operating Officer, The Forks. “Our river trail team has been working hard to open the rinks in the Port, and after a few more cold days we hope to continue down the Red.”

Title sponsor Assiniboine Credit Union is again pleased to be on board and providing a way for Winnipeggers to enjoy our city from an entirely different vantage point.

“It’s hard to believe this is our tenth year as title sponsor of the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail,” says ACU President and CEO, Al Morin. “Each year the programming gets better and better, and regardless of what Mother Nature throws our way, our sponsorship continues to enable our partners to build a world-class winter wonderland. It’s our great honour to be part of the evolution and fun.”

Programming this year includes some old favourites and some exciting new additions.

“There is really something for everyone this year; from ice painting and inukshuk building to Voyageur games and photo booth,” says Ginette Lavack-Walters, Executive Director, Festival du Voyageur. “We are extremely pleased that we can also offer free programming every weekend from noon until four.”

While the rivers may still need a few more cold days, the trails in Arctic Glacier Winter Park , on the Forks site are seeing a fair share of skaters.

“The 1.2 kilometres of trails within Arctic Glacier Winter Park and the two skating rinks are groomed daily,” said Paul Jordan, Chief Operating Officer, The Forks. “The rest of the amenities, including the snowboard park, toboggan run and snowman lane, are still under construction, but with the help of some snow will be completed soon.”

Arctic Glacier are always pleased to give back to the community, but have a special affinity for Arctic Glacier Winter Park as it’s so closely tied to their business.

“Ice is our business and it was only natural that we became the title sponsor of a park honouring winter,” says Keith McMahon, President and Chief Executive Officer, Arctic Glacier. “We are proud to have been a part of this celebration of winter for nine years as it provides us with a way to give back to the families of Winnipeg in a meaningful way while honouring the city we come from.”

Programming continues to be a big part of the success of Arctic Glacier Winter Park.

Winter Adventure Programming runs every Sunday beginning this weekend from 1:30pm – 3:30 pm and is free to the public. This year’s lineup includes Investors Group teepee storytelling and art program and Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides sponsored by Scotiabank.

We are extremely fortunate to have such amazing partners who enable us to provide all of our programming free of charge,” adds Jordan “Without their continued and long term support we really wouldn’t be able to offer this amazing park to so many.”

Arctic Glacier Winter Park is open from now until March, weather permitting. All attractions within Arctic Glacier Winter Park are free.

Skate Rentals are available at Iceland Skate Rentals located adjacent to the skate changing area. Rates are $2.50 for children and seniors and only $4.50 for adults. The skate change area as well as all trails, rinks and the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail are connected with rubber mats.

Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail is the Guinness World record holder for the longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world, with 8.54 kilometres. It is maintained and programmed through a collaboration between The Forks Renewal Corporation and Festival du Voyageur. ¬
