The Forks is saddened to hear about the passing of renowned architect Antoine Predock.
Predock not only designed the landmark Canadian Museum for Human Rights, but also was the first ever invited artist of the annual Warming Hut competition back in 2010.
“It was remarkable to see the absolute gusto and enthusiasm that he threw into the project,” says Peter Hargraves, principal at Spuntik Architecture and original mastermind behind the Warming Huts competition. “There was an incredible whimsical manner with which Predock and his team tested their ideas. I recall they even blasted their tinfoil-like Warming Hut with a fire extinguisher to see what the snow would do.”
Apparition, Predock's Warming Hut, was a haunting, ambiguous object enmeshed with the icy realm - snow drifts on this geologic microcosm while glaciers in miniature advance and recede in the aluminum folds. Solar fueled lighting within the wooden structural armature focuses on the entry aperture with an inviting, glowing promise of inner respite.
Predock's notable contributions of art and architecture have certainly left a mark here on The Forks and Winnipeg. He will be missed.
