Kelly Slater's 3D IMAX Surf Epic to Debut in Downtown Winnipeg
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KELLY SLATER’S 3D IMAX® SURF EPIC TO DEBUT IN DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG
Film offers unique glimpse into the interplay of natural forces that create The “Ultimate Wave”
MEDIA SCREENING, WEDNESDAY, JULY 6 at 10 am
IMAX Winnipeg -- The most iconic surfer of modern times, Kelly Slater emerges the downtown IMAX Winnipeg screen in his first ever 3D IMAX® film appearance in veteran director Stephen Low’s production, The Ultimate Wave Tahiti, set to premier on July 8, 2011.
“This film is one wild ride! It explains the natural forces that control wave creation while showcasing those who ride those waves better than anyone else,” says Bong Villarba, Theatre Director. “It’s also the first giant screen film to use extreme surfing to explain the complex science of waves and why they matter.”
Slater and famed Tahitian waterman, Raimana Van Bastolaer take on Tahiti’s most extreme surf break known as Teahupo’o, often referred to as the “ultimate wave”, in this epic visual experience that brings science and the quest for the perfect wave to life. It’s a truly unique ocean wave, and the perfect classroom to discuss the mystery that is a wave.
As key personalities in the film, Slater and Von Bastolaer help to explain where waves come from, why they are important and how communities and people far from the ocean shore are affected by the ocean’s interplay within our ecosystem. With the use of advanced animation techniques and science support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other authorities, Slater’s hands-on wave experience is woven together with profound scientific insights.
Slater’s impressive resume lends weight to his insights and credibility to his film role as lecturer and ocean authority. The world fell in love with Slater during his meteoric advance from the amateur surfing circuit in Florida to his early domination of professional competition circuit. His nine world-championships, the most ever won by any surfer, give Slater an enviable platform from which he frequently influences the sport and surfing lifestyle.
Executive produced by K2 Communications, The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D began its highly anticipated global release in February 2010 with premier events in Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia. Underwriting and marketing for the film was provided by Suzuki, Tahiti Tourisme, and Quiksilver. Filmed entirely in 3D - the Stephen Low production is also being shown in 2D and eventually will be distributed for small screen, DVD and other platform applications.
