Happy Trails to You… Until We Skate Again

The Forks, Winnipeg – After a fun-filled winter of family programming the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail is being closed.

“We’ve done a full assessment and the trail conditions are really deteriorating – to the point that we have now closed the trail for the season.” says Paul Jordan, Chief Operating Officer at The Forks. “We had a good run, but it’s now time to stay off the river.”

Arctic Glacier Winter Park, which is contained on the site at The Forks, will remain open weather permitting for as long as possible. It includes 1.2 kilometres of skating trails, an Olympic-sized skating rink, the artificially cooled rink under the Canopy, toboggan run and snowboard hill.

The trail was open for 8 weeks and, on average, normally closes in early March.

Every year the ACURT will be different, as Mother Nature will continue dictating its distance and location. In 2008, the ACURT became the Guinness World record holder for the longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world, with 8.54km. It is maintained and programmed through collaboration between The Forks Renewal Corporation and Festival du Voyageur.
