A Meeting Place
For over 6,000 years people have been meeting at The Forks.
Growing from an ancient meeting and trading place where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, the history of Winnipeg stretches back millennia.
Used continuously over time for gathering, celebrations, trading, transportation and settlement, the historic site at the centre of Canada is, at its heart, a place of reunion and rediscovery.
Generation after generation has returned to this site to reconnect and rejoice.
Once, those celebrations took the form of feasts and storytelling after the day’s hunt. And then, the rekindling of relationships among the Cree, Ojibway, Saulteaux and Dakota as their nomadic lifestyle brought them back year after year to settle for a time, and move on.
Today, the vision of those who came before is realized yet again as new partners return us to our riverbanks.
The destiny of The Forks is that of a meeting place. Once more, just as it has been for so many centuries, The Forks is a place to celebrate the human spirit of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
