Biofuel
Did you know the diesel engine was originally designed to be fueled using peanut oil? This inspired us, so in 2008, we started experimenting with a local mechanic shop, Western Turbo, to operate our site equipment using the waste vegetable oil collected from the restaurants at The Forks.
Older diesel engines can be modified to burn vegetable oil. We started collecting and processing waste fryer oil from the market tenants to fuel suitable equipment. This provides The Forks with a carbon-neutral fuel source that smells great!
Ironically, the newer diesel engines have strict emission standards that can’t tolerate this biofuel. As equipment ages out, we hope to make the switch to battery electric.
