Archaeological Monitoring of the Extension of the Parking Lot Drainage System at The Forks

Quaternary Consultants Ltd.

Monitoring of installations yielded 29 Postcontact artifacts from the Hudson’s Bay Experimental Farm (1836-1848) and Railway/Industrial (1860-1988) periods representing the following categories: architectural objects; lighting equipment; communication; clothing; transportation; faunal remains; glass and ceramic storage containers; and dinnerware. Stratigraphy is discussed in detail. Appendices include an artifact catalogue.

Located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, The Forks (also known as Nestawaya in Cree) has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years – located on the original lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Lakota peoples and resides in the homeland of the Red River Métis. This place also has deep ties with Dene and Inuit peoples, operates with water from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, and has welcomed people from all walks of life to trade, visit, and build community.
