Analysis of Botanical Samples from The Forks, Winnipeg

This is a brief report on the results of testing to identify species from microbotanical samples recovered from the Parks Canada archaeological excavations at The Forks in 1988. Bulrush, hazel, oak, plum, pin cherry and sand cherry were identified.

Located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, The Forks (also known as Nestawaya in Cree) has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years – located on the original lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Lakota peoples and resides in the homeland of the Red River Métis.
