Archaeological Impact Assessment for the Proposed Canadian Museum for Human Rights at The Forks
Quaternary Consultants Ltd.
Impact assessment of the proposed site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights reported on 24 trenches excavated by backhoe, 21 of which yielded a total of 71,874 artifacts from an area only 53m2. The 49 discrete cultural layers uncovered represent use of the area by at least four different groups between AD 1000 and AD 1500. Diagnostic ceramics identify these as Bird Lake, Duck Bay, Rainy River, and Blackduck traditions. Artifacts recovered include: lithic and bone tools; faunal and floral remains; ceramics; and trade copper. Stratigraphy is detailed by layer.
