All Trails Lead To Winnipeg ...Waterways!

All Trails Lead To Winnipeg
All trails lead to Winnipeg,
Where the prairie road-ways join.
All rails lead to Winnipeg,
By the Red and Assiniboine.

Nearly a century after being selected as Winnipeg's official song, by Mayor Ralph Webb in 1925, this tune is making a comeback. Not only does the melody serve as the perfect backdrop to Winnipeg 150 celebrations, but it's also the unofficial theme song of Winnipeg Waterways, the latest addition to The Forks' vibrant community!

We’re thrilled to introduce Will Belford and Griff Hewitt, the dynamic duo behind Winnipeg Waterways, here at The Forks. Friends since childhood, Will and Griff come from diverse professional backgrounds but share a passion for Winnipeg and its waterways.

Will (left), a staunch advocate for urbanism and alternative transportation, has a career spanning aviation, the cycling community, and most recently, managing the fleet for Peg City Car Co-op. For him, water transportation was the natural next step in his career. Griff (right), on the other hand, is a biologist with AAE Tech Services, a consulting firm providing environmental services for projects across Canada. Specializing in remote data collection and wilderness survival, with a focus on fish and wildlife conservation, Griff brings a unique perspective to the venture. Together, they've created an exciting way to explore our rivers.

Starting this season, Winnipeg Waterways welcomed three beautiful yellow boats to their fleet. Named Julia, Denise, and Shana, in honour of Will and Griff's mothers, these tour boats provide a delightful 40-minute tour, starting and ending at The Forks Historic Port. Whether you choose a private vessel, accommodating up to 12 people, or decide to join a public tour, you'll enjoy breathtaking views and historical insights on each sail.

Interested in taking your students on an alternative field trip? How about senior recreation programs, looking for a different way to engage in activity and explore the city? Special group rates apply for students and different community programs, so be sure to send an email to Winnipeg Waterways to learn more about special group rates and bookings.

Other important facts:

  • Their boats are accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, and the like.
  • Pups are also welcome to join the ride on a leash.
  • Discounted rates are offered for seniors and children under 12.
  • Kids under two-years-old ride for free.
  • Reservations can be made in advance, but tickets are always available at the Winnipeg Waterways kiosk, located on the patio outside The Forks Market.

Oh! And it gets better!

Once the river levels stabilize and the banks are ready for foot traffic, Winnipeg Waterways will begin operating the Water Bus at The Forks. This river-based public transportation option offers a quick and scenic way to travel between riverfront neighbourhoods in Winnipeg's city centre. The buses will run every 15 minutes, and similar to an on-land transit system, there's no need to pre-book. Simply show up at your chosen dock and pay the fare upon boarding.
