Restoring the Riverfront: Alexander Docks

Posted on Aug 14, 2025 by The Forks Market

For nearly a decade, the Alexander Docks have been closed off. But this stretch of the Red River has always been more than an empty dock. It is a place of history, trade, gathering, courage, and, at times, loss.

Now, it’s ready for a new chapter.

What’s Coming?

On August 14, 2025, The Forks shared a new vision for the Alexander Docks: A reimagined riverfront space designed for gathering, ceremony, play, and reflection. This new plan comes directly from the community. It is was created based on extensive consultations with area residents, businesses as well as the families of Murdered and Missing Indigenous, Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.

Inspired by the river’s resilience and warmth, the renewed space will include a fixed dock, shady seating areas, tiered landscaping, and restored bike and pedestrian paths. The project will also improve access for canoes, kayaks, and the Waterbus, vitally reconnecting the Exchange District to South Point Douglas and linking to both the North Winnipeg Parkway Trail and The Forks.

President & CEO of the Forks, Sara Stasiuk, puts it simply:

“We’re not just fixing a dock, we are restoring a connection and bringing new life to a place that matters.”

Why Now?

As Winnipeg continues to grow, so does the need for accessible and welcoming public spaces. Revitalizing the Alexander Docks supports active transportation, promotes community well-being, and celebrates our city’s history along the waterfront.

With growing momentum for sustainable urban development and a rising love for outdoor recreation, this project will help strengthen neighborhood ties and create an even more vibrant riverfront experience for everyone.

What's Next?

The Forks estimates the redevelopment of Alexander Docks will cost approximately $10.8 million. The fundraising will be led by The Forks Foundation which has begun having discussions with both public and private funding partners. This investment is crucial to revitalize a now-derelict site, making it safe and beautiful for all Winnipeggers to enjoy.

The Forks expects work on the project to begin as early as winter 2025-26 with the demolition and removal of the old docks. The project’s completion date is still to be determined based on the successful conclusion of the fundraising.
