Father's Day gift guide

Posted on Jun 10, 2019 by The Forks Market

Father’s Day is coming up fast, but don’t worry, you still have a few days to hunt down the perfect token of your appreciation!

We know it can sometimes be challenging to buy for the father figure in your life, so we went shopping in The Forks Market to curate a few gift ideas based on what kinda guy your dad is, keeping in mind not everyone enjoys beer, fishing or sports (contrary to every Father’s Day advertisement you’ve ever seen).

Keep scrolling for a few slightly outside-the-box ideas for your dad, and hopefully one will be a good fit!

For the dad who likes the finer things in life…

If your father-figure has the best taste of anyone you know, head over to Ellement and check out their selection of spirits. We asked the staff what they would recommend, and they pulled a bottle of Delord Bas-Armagnac brandy and a bottle of Jules Gautret cognac as their top picks, both of which are in the $50-$60 range. And if you’ve got a dapper dad who’s always in a suit and brogues, grab him some accessories to help keep him looking sharp, like a suit-folder (which helps save space when travelling for work) or some sneaker/shoe rescue wipes, which quickly gets rid of dirt and stains.

For the dad who needs some R&R…

Let’s face it, dads sometimes need a break, too! Why not create the perfect space for some rest and relaxation by picking out a pair of super warm and comfy slippers, filling the room with warm and cozy scents from a Coal & Canary or Farmer’s Son Co. candle (both local companies, to boot!), and to really set the scene, grab a cute planter from The Forks Trading Company and pop some greenery in there. Finish things off with a book from McNally Robinson’s ‘New and Noteworthy’ wall, and you’ve got yourself the perfect dad-cation gift.

For the dad who is into self care…

Proper skincare and facial hair maintenance has become a bit of a trend for men as of late, and we are here for it. Treat your dad to a luxurious beard or shave oil, a beard-trimming kit or a great, thick moisturizer; he will thank you later! Also, the Loving Barbers will be opening up a barbershop on the second floor of The Forks Market (next to McNally Robinson) very soon, so you’ll be able to take your dad for a great haircut, beard shaping or a shave, too!

For the dad who loves Winnipeg…

We all know that dad in our lives who is a born-and-bred Winnipegger and is flippin’ proud of it. Well, we’ve got lots of ideas for that guy on your list, like the adorable Winnipeg neighbourhood prints by Happyland Print Shop, Winnipeg map prints by Silver Birch and vintage Winnipeg photo prints by Heather Robertson (all of which you can find in The Forks Trading Company) or our very-own The Forks merch from the kiosk on the main floor. You could also grab a Forks Market gift card and bring him down to enjoy our new, outdoor patio with some food and bevvies as you watch the river flow by. Can’t get much more Winnipeg than that!

For the dad who loves fun and games…

If game night is the best night for your pop, you can add to his game collection with everything from a beautiful wooden cribbage board shaped like Manitoba ($70) to silly board and card games such as Sushi Go Party or Unstable Unicorns. And if you'd prefer to do a more experiential gift, bring him down to our Phantom Amusement arcade on the main floor; there are more than a dozen pinball machines (vintage and modern) as well as a handful of arcade games which will keep him busy for hours. And, yes, there’s a change machine inside so you don’t have to worry about running out of quarters and loonies!
