Public Transit to Set Sail on The Rivers

For the first time since 2018, Winnipeggers will be able to take the water bus connecting several public docks in the city’s central neighbourhoods. The water bus along the Red and Assiniboine rivers is set to start service this weekend.

The water bus service is offered in partnership with Winnipeg Waterways, the new boat tour and transit proprietor operating at The Forks.

“These rivers have been thoroughfares for thousands of years, shaping our city’s history and culture along their banks,” says Sara Stasiuk, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks North Portage. “The water bus connects us to these rivers and is a unique transportation option for the community.”

Like regular bus service, the water bus will offer people a hop-on hop-off option for getting from dock to dock. There is no pre-booking necessary, and the buses will run approximately every 15 minutes.

“When we launched Winnipeg Waterways earlier this year one of our main goals was to bring the water bus back,” says Will Belford, Co-Owner, Winnipeg Waterways. “We see this service as an integral transportation option for our city.”

Fares can be paid with credit card upon boarding the bus, with four different options ranging from a single fare ($6) to an unlimited monthly membership ($200).

The Water Bus will operate daily, until Sunday, September 15 2024, stopping at seven different docks: The Forks, Hugo, Norwood, Stephen Juba Park, The Manitoba Legislature, The Assiniboine River Walk at the Midtown Bridge, and the Esplanade Riel.

Further details, operating times, and a map of the stops can be found on the Winnipeg Waterways website.
