Compost Week is around the corner! To celebrate, The Forks is hosting two days of programming to showcase how tiny scraps can make a big impact.
Composting is an impactful way to manage waste materials. It highlights the concept of “cradle to cradle” where nothing is wasted and everything is put back into use. At The Forks, composting is practiced through its ongoing Target Zero initiative. Every day, innovative waste management practices are enacted to move the space closer to zero waste and zero carbon emissions.
For example, when visitors dine at The Forks, visitors' food waste, glass, takeout containers, and dishware are carefully sorted by The Forks Eco Team. Any compostable materials are carefully collected and sent to the compost site. They are then transformed and returned to soil as nutrient-rich compost.
This compost week, The Forks is taking visitors down to its composting site to give a closer behind the scenes.
Let's take a look at the activities planned ⬇️
Compost Week Celebration
May 7 | 📍 The Forks Market

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket)! Celebrate Compost Week with us and get a behind-the-scenes look at The Forks composting facility with free guided tours. At the end of the tour, visitors are welcome to fill their own bag or bucket with nutrient-rich compost to give their garden a boost! Tours include an uphill walk, so come dressed for the weather (it might get a little mucky).
There will also be an additional free compost giveaway under the canopy starting at 10 AM, first-come, first-served, while supplies last.
Smell Walk
May 9 | 1:00 PM & 3:00 PM | 📍 The Forks Market

This 90-minute workshop designed to get visitors in-tune with their sense of smell as a method for exploring the hybrid and built natural environment at The Forks. With a lesson on aroma wheels, olfactory terminology, and microbial scent categories, visitors will learn to synthesize, discuss, and create a map of scents.
