Summer Kick Off: What's happening at The Forks this summer

Today is the first day of summer, and we're looking forward to all the events happening at The Forks during the summer! One of our favourite things is having a site full of people enjoying music, activities, and the summer sunshine.

Here is the rundown of the major events going on this season:

Indigenous Day Live

Saturday, June 21
Multiple locations

Today is also National Indigenous Peoples Day, and we're celebrating on Saturday, June 23, with APTN's Indigenous Day Live. The show runs from 7:30 to 10:30, but they have activities like traditional storytelling and games, Indigenous Day Live Pow Wow, a skateboard competition, artisans, food vendors, the Winnipeg “Best Bannock” competition, the APTN Kids tent and much more going on all day.

Tribal Villages Pow Wows

June 21 | June 27 | July 1 | July 21 | August 6 | August 18 | September 3
Oodena Celebration Circle

The first of the summer Pow Wows start on Indigenous Day live. Head down to Oodena Celebration Circle to feel the beat of the drum and see the colour and movement of dancers in full regalia doing traditional dance styles. The Pow Wow is a way of life for many Indigenous peoples, and it is really something to see if you haven't already been to one before.

Ciclovia

Sunday, June 24
Around The Forks Market

Ciclovia is a Spanish word meaning “cycleway.” It is not only cycling but living the cycling lifestyle – taking care of your body, maintaining your bike, and being a part of a vibrant community. There will be a full day of live music, a makers market, free swing dance, yoga and zumba classes, and of course, a lot of cycling.

Oral History Tours

Wednesdays in July
Meet at the St. Boniface Cathedral

This is your opportunity to learn the history of The Forks and the surrounding area from the Indigenous perspective. On this tour, you will learn pieces of information that has never been written down in history books. Elders, Clarence and Barbra Nepinak, will walk you around and pass along to you the stories that have been passed down to them through generations of sharing. Trust us, this is something you really need to do. And it's free!

Canada Day at The Forks

July 1
Multiple locations

This is a staple every year at The Forks, and this year is no exception. There will be a full day of music, activities, fireworks, good food, and great company to celebrate our country's birthday. Bike Valet will be on-site offering free, secure bike and helmet storage all day, plan to take the bus or park off-site and walk over OR join one of our guided bike rides!

Trolley between Assiniboine Park & The Forks

Everyday

Now you can take a free trolley ride from Assiniboine Park to The Forks. It makes is so much easier to plan a full day of fun with the kiddos – a trip to the Zoo, a trolley ride, and then a wander around The Forks with an ice cream in hand. The full schedule and route is available on the Assiniboine Park website.

Eco Tours

Our Target Zero Eco Tour presented by Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba is an innovative and interactive walking tour that teaches kids and families how to minimize their carbon footprint by showcasing what we have done here at The Forks. The tours, created and executed in conjunction with Green Kids Inc., offers a 60 minute interactive walking experience for school-aged children during the school year, and families in the summer months.

RibFest

August 26-28
Festival Field

It's pretty much exactly what you think it is plus a little extra. Some of the best BBQ masters come gather at The Forks to compete for the title of best ribs, and you're the judge! Come try the deliciousness, dance to the bands playing, and have a drink in the beer garden.
