Summer IS coming!

Posted on Apr 16, 2019 by The Forks Market

Despite the minor snowfall on Monday and any other random acts of winter Mother Nature has in store for us over the next few weeks, summer weather is on the way, and we can’t wait to get our woolies into storage, crack out those sandals and bare legs and get our base burn — erm, tan — started.

Need some help to get in the long-lost summer spirit? Here’s a reminder of all the things we love about summertime at The Forks, plus a few new additions that will have you swooning all season long.

RIVERS

We love to see all the attention the frozen rivers get in the winter, but there’s tons of aquatic fun to be had in the summer as well! Be a bit of a tourist in your own city and take a Splash Dash boat tour, or catch the River Spirit Water Bus to The Forks! Get your tackle box prepped and head out to the Fish Festival in July or the Fishing Derby in the fall; take a stroll on the Riverwalk or paddle your way up and down the Red or Assiniboine. No better time to get your feet wet with a new activity! Pun absolutely intended.

PATIOS

What’s better than sipping on drinks with pals on a patio on a perfect summer day? Nothing, that’s what. SMITH at the Inn at The Forks and Era Bistro at the Canadian Museum For Human Rights will both have their patios in full swing soon, PLUS keep your eyes peeled for other patio-related news coming our way for 2019 patio season!

FESTIVALS

Winnipeg is a festival city, and we at The Forks are no strangers to getting in on that party action. This summer alone we are hosting more than a dozen celebrations, including the Manito Ahbee Festival Kickoff at the Oodena Celebration Circle, the Winnipeg Pride Festival, Kidsfest, Desi Fest, Gamesfest and, of course, our annual Canada Day bash on July 1!

FOOD

Honestly, what’s summer without a frozen treat from Neon Cone or Fro-gurts? Or mini doughnuts from the Mini Donut Factory? Or… mac n’ cheese? OK, maybe that last one is a bit of a stretch but rumour has is, there's a Mac N’ Cheese Fest coming to CN Field in July. And for you meat-eaters out there, Ribfest will be back in August. Commence drooling immediately.

And don’t forget about The Forks Public Orchard! There are more than 60 fruit trees and 75 fruit-bearing shrubs that will be ripe for the pickin’ soon, and you can head over any time to pick/eat whatever you want.

FITNESS

Starting in June, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ be kicking off Fitness in the Park once again at Upper Fort Garry weekdays through August! If you’re not into classes, you can always grab your bike, board or scooter and take a ride around the site; there are tons of great nooks and crannies to explore with your family or friends. Or hit up the Parks Canada playground with the kiddies and get your heart-rate up with some sliding, swinging and splashing! If dancing is more your groove, look forward to Salsa Sundays and Swingin' at Sunset returning to the Canopy this summer.
