The Forks has teamed up with new presenting sponsor Great-West Life to heat things up this Canada Day with a stellar, all-local lineup of live music on two stages and tons of family activities all day long.
Thousands of people will be treated to performances from over a dozen acts, culminating in a remarkable onstage collaboration between acclaimed indie pop rock outfit Mise en Scene and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO). Fireworks will cap off the night at 11 p.m.
“Community celebrations like Canada Day are exactly what we’re here for,” says Paul Jordan, CEO, The Forks. “It is always exciting to see the site come to life with folks celebrating our country. This year we’re extremely thankful to have the support of new Presenting Sponsor Great-West Life to put on this event. As always, our partners at Manitoba Music have done an outstanding job of putting together an all-local line-up for the day.”
The main event at the Festival Stage kicks off with a twang from country singer/songwriter Quinton Blair at 7 p.m., followed by bilingual soul/funk outfit Jérémie and the Delicious Hounds. To close out this year’s festivities, the always dynamic Mise en Scene will join the WSO to set the stage for a spectacular fireworks display.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the Canada Day celebrations at The Forks this year,” says Stefan Kristjanson, President and Chief Operating Officer, Canada, Great-West Life. “Canada Day is the biggest single-day event at The Forks, and we’re proud to join the Winnipeg community to celebrate Canada’s birthday.”
The bustling hub at The Forks Market Outdoor Stage will feature diverse Manitoba acts including Latin jazz act Papa Mambo, the chamber folk of Raine Hamilton, singer/songwriter Ila Barker, Manila-born and Winnipeg-based power pop punk trio The 1221, silken-voiced JUNO-nominee Don Amero, hip hop artist Malcolm-Jay, pop/soul band Lanikai, indie folk/rocker Micah Erenberg, explosive grunge rockers Silence Kit, and indie pop act Sc Mira. The site will also host pop-up shows from eclectic folk/jazz trio Casati and indie singer/songwriter Dave Quanbury.
“There is so much stellar musical talent in Manitoba and we’re excited to once again team up with The Forks to put over a dozen acts on stages in front of Winnipeg audiences for this year's celebration,” says Sean McManus, Manitoba Music’s executive director.
Beyond the stellar musical line-up, folks can expect plenty of festivity at The Forks throughout the day, including: a pow wow and Founding Nations Tribal Village in Oodena Celebration Circle, Great-West Life hosted activities, Dancing Under the Canopy, art programming with ArtCity, food trucks, crafts with the WAG, lacrosse demonstrations, and a Lucky Girl Pop Up vendor market.
With so many people flocking to The Forks for the festivities, people should plan their Canada Day transportation in advance. Bike Valet will be on-site offering free, secure bike and helmet storage all day, plan to take the bus or park off-site and walk over.
