Trail Together Returns: Adopt a Metre Today!

Adopt your metre!

Love winter at The Forks? Here’s your chance to help bring it to life.

This winter, The Forks Foundation is once again inviting the community to help build and support the trail by “adopting” a metre through its Trail Together campaign.

Metres can be adopted in the donor’s name or in honour of a trail lover in their life. For every $50 donation, the donor receives a tax receipt and a mention of the honouree on the Trail Together webpage. Plus, come river trail season, the metre will be marked with the honouree’s name on a sign along the trail

Building the Nestaweya River Trail is no small feat. It takes a dedicated team of more than a dozen people to monitor, flood, test, and build every metre of ice. Whether the season runs a full 75 days or just a short nine-day stretch, it takes the same amount of work to build it. During longer seasons, the trail welcomes over 200,000 visitors, making it a vital connector for the community.

The Forks receives no operational funding from any level of government, so amenities like this rely entirely on community support. Rain or shine, freeze or flow, resources are committed each year to getting the trail ready. In seasons where the river trail is shortened or can’t open, those same resources are redirected to support other winter programming across The Forks site.

“Our team spends hundreds of hours preparing the trail long before anyone laces a skate,” says Sara Stasiuk, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks North Portage. “Support from the community helps us invest in the work needed to open the trail and give people a special reason to go outdoors during the frostiest months.”
